HEARTWOOD BROCHURE

Candace Kreitlow & Katie Waldren, as the duo Heartwood, create elegant, energetic music with a myriad of instruments including the Celtic harp, hammered and lap dulcimer, guitar, fiddle and an exceptional blend of voices. Both Candace & Katie are seasoned musicians and recording artists with years of experience. Heartwood's sparkling repertoire displays a Celtic /Appalachian flair that includes both traditional and contemporary American and British Isles folk music, as well as an abundance of original material. Candace & Katie have established themselves as a well respected duo in the Wisconsin folk community, performing for festivals, coffee houses, gallery openings, weddings, conferences, libraries and venues such as American Players Theatre and the Monona Terrace. Their first instrumental album, entitled Waterdance, released August 1996, features a repertoire inspired by the sounds and sights of nature. "Their melodies move, flow, and intertwine with brightness and elegance." (Dirty Linen Magazine) The title cut from this recording appears on Narada's  collection Faces of the Harp. Their vocal album, Heartwood,  released 1997 is ". . . a lovely collection . . . beautiful vocals and instrumental work, with excellent arranging." (Philip Boulding of Magical Strings) Selections from these recordings are featured in The Rush For Grey Gold, a 1998 documentary aired on PBS to celebrate Wisconsin's Sesquicentennial. Heartwood's newest  recording, Night Dancer,  is a "stunning" collection of richly arranged instrumentals from the fall and winter seasons.

En route to Wisconsin, from California, Katie Waldren spent thirteen years in the Mountains of North Carolina where she performed and gave work-shops at local music festivals. As an eight- year member of the Asheville-based trio, Braidstream, a regularly featured ensemble at the Biltmore Estate, she recorded two albums, Lord Of The Moon & Braidstream. Her solo-seasonal recording, Cold Frosty Morning, creatively combines the sounds of the lap & hammered dulcimers together. Katie shares her passion for the dulcimer in her three instructional books and teaches workshops throughout the country.

Candace Kreitlow, a Wisconsin native, began performing with the UW Wisconsin Singers in 1968. Since then,  with her guitar and Celtic harp, she has performed throughout the Midwest with several musical groups including the duo Generations, with her daughter, Holly, and with the Outskirts Trio, sharing stages with Bill Staines and Prairie Home Companion's Garrison Keillor. Her three recordings include Outskirts' When The Moon Smiles,  and Generations' Dream Maker and Lift Me, awarded nationally by "Parent's Guide To Children's Media" and "Parent's Choice."
